Col. Henry Steele Olcott clamoured and awakened a nation that was fast asleep without any vigour to rise up. He was the pioneer who agitated to give due place to Buddhism and the reformer who compelled the colonial government that existed at that time to declare the Vesak Full Moon Day, a public holiday. He was the architect who designed the six coloured Buddhist Flag that has gained universal recognition. He was one of the pioneers responsible for the establishment of National Schools such as Ananda College.

As part of the 133rd anniversary celebrations of establishment of Ananda College, Colombo, Ananda College remembers founders including Col. Henry Steele Olcott who was able to create history through his immeasurable service towards the revival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Ananda College Old Boys’ Association organises Olcott Oration on a timely theme every year as a part of celebrations of the founders.

This year, the Olcott Oration is scheduled to be held tomorrow (Nov. 23) at the Kularatne Auditorium, Ananda College. The event is to be started at 4 p.m. This year, the oration will be delivered by Maithri Panagoda. Maithri is a distinguished Old Anandian based in Australia and a successful lawyer who is fighting for the rights of the Australian Aboriginal Community. He has written many articles on legal matters and edited chapters of the Lawyers Practice Manual and is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame Australia.

Maithri has been made a member of the Order of Australia (AM). He received the award from the Governor General of Australia on Queen’s birthday in 2016. In the Australian Honours’ System, appointments to the Order of Australia confer recognition for outstanding achievement and service. It is awarded for extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement.

If there was any person who was capable of uplifting the Sinhala Buddhists who were helpless due to colonial rule, although their forefathers enjoyed sublime virtues enriched with the advent of Arahath Mahinda, his achievement in re-establishing a golden era in this country makes him really great and sublime.

Prof. Panagoda delivers Sir Olcott oration – Sunday Times

The Olcott Oration in remembrance of Col Henry Steele Olcott, a founder of Ananda College Colombo, was held at the college hall yesterday.

The oration was delivered by Maithri Panagoda, an Old Anandian based in Australia and a lawyer who is fighting for the rights of the Australian Aboriginal Community. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame in Australia.

Ananda College celebrates its 133rd anniversary this year. One of the most important events in connection with the ‘Founders Day’ celebrations is the annual Olcott Memorial Oration.

 

The oration will be delivered from 4.00 p.m. onwards at the Kularatne Auditorium on the topic ‘Achieving Social Justice through the Rule of Law’

The oration will be delivered by Maithri Panagoda on the topic ‘Achieving Social Justice through the Rule of Law.’ He is a distinguished Old Anandian based in Australia and a successful lawyer fighting for the rights of the Australian aboriginal community. Mr. Panagoda has penned many articles on legal matters and edited chapters of the Lawyers’ Practice Manual and is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame, Australia.

Col. Olcott did an extensive study of Buddhism. Consequently, with a team of people including Madame Blavatsky, came to Ceylon (then) on May 17, 1880 and at Vijayananda Pirivena at Weliwatta in Galle, Col. Olcott and Madame Blavatsky became true Buddhists by accepting the Triple Gem and observing Panchaseela from chief monk Ven. Akmeemana
Dharmarama Thera.

Through his close association with intellectuals such as Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera, chief monk, Ven. Miggettuwatte Gunananda Thera and Ven. Waskaduwe Sri Subuthi Thera, Col. Olcott realised the plight of the Sinhala Buddhists at that time. Considering the gravity of this, he thought of the need to unite and create a formidable workforce to act fast.
He realised the need to provide Buddhist children an appropriate Buddhist environment through a systematic education and to achieve this objective, he established the Colombo Buddhist Theosophical Society on June 17, 1880.

Maithri Panagoda conferred with Order of Australia (AM)

Mr. Maithri Panagoda, was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) on the Queen’s Birthday with the award conferred by Governor General of Australia.

This award is in recognition of outstanding achievement and service. The citation for Mr. Panagoda’s honour is for “significant service to the Sri Lankan community in NSW, and to the law, particularly in litigation and dispute.

Maithri Panagoda is one of Australia’s leading compensation lawyers. Educated in both Sydney and Sri Lanka, Maithri has over 35 years experience in litigation and dispute resolution. The Law Society of NSW accredits him as a personal injury specialist.

Maithri practised as a lawyer in Dubbo for nearly 10 years before joining Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers in 1991. He worked with the Western Aboriginal Legal Service and since joining Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers he has continued his commitment to representing Aboriginal people. He has been involved in a large number of successful claims being brought by members of the Stolen Generation.

A distinguished old boy of Ananda College Colombo, he is fluent in Sinhalese. Maithri is also involved in various activities with the Sri Lankan community in New South Wales.

Maithri has also been a member of Law Society’s Medico Legal Liaison Committee, Senior Solicitors’ Committee and the Litigation Law and Practice Committee.

Maithri has published numerous articles and publications and is a regular speaker at legal seminars. He is the author of the chapter on workers’ compensation in the Lawyers Practice Manual published by the Thompson Lawbook Co.

By virtue of his professional standing, Maithri is regularly invited to present seminars to fellow lawyers and university students studying law.

“The Stolen Generations project is the biggest achievement in my career. Not many law firms would have ventured into this area because it’s a significant investment in time and money and the outcome is uncertain, but we have been able to get results mainly because of our approach with the parties.”

He is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame.
